The Western India Rugby Football Union (WIRFU) is the officially recognized governing body for the sport of rugby union in the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Daman & Diu. Incorporated as a non-profit company under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956 (Registration No. U92413MH2002NPL137391), our mission is to promote, develop, and regulate the game at all levels.
We are affiliated with the Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and through it, World Rugby. Our operational headquarters are strategically located in Mumbai, the financial capital of India, enabling us to effectively coordinate activities across the western region.
WIRFU oversees all aspects of the game: from grassroots participation programs in schools and colleges to elite senior and age-grade competitions. We manage player registration, coach and match official education, tournament sanctioning, and disciplinary matters. Our structured approach ensures the sport grows sustainably while upholding the core values of Integrity, Passion, Solidarity, Discipline, and Respect.

WIRFU is committed to the holistic growth of rugby union, from grassroots to high performance.
Our flagship grassroots program introduces rugby to children aged 6-14 in schools across Western India. Focusing on non-contact Tag Rugby, the program emphasizes fun, fitness, and fundamental movement skills. Over 300 schools are currently part of this initiative, reaching more than 15,000 children annually.
We offer a structured pathway for coaches and referees, from introductory Level 1 courses to advanced Level 3 certifications. Courses are conducted by World Rugby-accredited educators and cover technical skills, game understanding, safety, and ethics. Scholarship programs are available for promising candidates.
Actively promoting gender equity, WIRFU runs dedicated women's rugby programs, tournaments, and leadership workshops. Our 'Try Rugby Girls' campaign has seen a 200% increase in female participation over the last five years. We support women as players, coaches, administrators, and match officials.
