The Western India Rugby Football Union (WIRFU) is the officially recognized governing body for the sport of rugby union in the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Daman & Diu. Incorporated as a non-profit company under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956 (Registration No. U92413MH2002NPL137391), our mission is to promote, develop, and regulate the game at all levels.

WIRFU oversees all aspects of the game: from grassroots participation programs in schools and colleges to elite senior and age-grade competitions. We manage player registration, coach and match official education, tournament sanctioning, and disciplinary matters. Our structured approach ensures the sport grows sustainably while upholding the core values of Integrity, Passion, Solidarity, Discipline, and Respect.

Rugby Development & Programs

WIRFU is committed to the holistic growth of rugby union, from grassroots to high performance.

Get Into Rugby

Our flagship grassroots program introduces rugby to children aged 6-14 in schools across Western India. Focusing on non-contact Tag Rugby, the program emphasizes fun, fitness, and fundamental movement skills. Over 300 schools are currently part of this initiative, reaching more than 15,000 children annually.

Coach & Match Official Education

We offer a structured pathway for coaches and referees, from introductory Level 1 courses to advanced Level 3 certifications. Courses are conducted by World Rugby-accredited educators and cover technical skills, game understanding, safety, and ethics. Scholarship programs are available for promising candidates.

Women in Rugby

Actively promoting gender equity, WIRFU runs dedicated women's rugby programs, tournaments, and leadership workshops. Our 'Try Rugby Girls' campaign has seen a 200% increase in female participation over the last five years. We support women as players, coaches, administrators, and match officials.

High Performance Pathway

The WIRFU High Performance Unit identifies and nurtures talented players for state, national, and international representation. The pathway includes:

  • Regional Academies: Centres of excellence in Mumbai, Pune, and Goa.
  • Age-Grade State Teams: U-16, U-18, and U-20 squads competing in national championships.
  • Senior State Team: The Western India representative side for the National Rugby Championship.
  • Sports Science Support: Access to strength & conditioning, nutrition, and physiotherapy.
